The Ultimate Guide to SVGs: How to Find and Download Amazing Cut Files for Your Cricut or Silhouette!

In this article, we will discuss how to find and download Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) cut files for your Cricut or Silhouette machine.

SVG cut files are a popular choice for crafters as they can be easily resized without losing quality.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced crafter, learning how to find and download SVG cut files is an essential skill.

So, let’s get started!

How to Download SVG Cut Files

Downloading SVG cut files may seem daunting if you haven’t done it before, but once you know the process, it becomes straightforward.

Let’s go through the steps for downloading SVG cut files on different devices.

Downloading SVG Files on a Windows Computer

If you are using a Windows computer, the most common scenario is using the Chrome browser. Here’s how you can download SVG files in Chrome:

  • Locate the file you want to download and click on the link or download button.
  • The file will start downloading, and you can find it in your Downloads folder on your computer. If you’re unsure where your computer downloads files, you can check the Downloads folder in Chrome by clicking the little down arrow next to the file name at the bottom of the window.
  • Once the file is downloaded, you’ll notice that it is a compressed archive ending in .zip. This is because most SVG files are bundled with different versions and formats. To open and decompress the zip file, right-click on the zip archive and select “Extract All” from the menu. Choose the destination where you want to extract the files and click “Extract.”
  • A new folder with the same name as the zip file will appear. Double-click on the folder to open it and reveal its contents. Inside, you may see various files, including text files, PNG files, DXF files, and SVG files. The SVG file is the one you want to use.
  • It’s important to note that sometimes the SVG file may appear as a Chrome HTML file type. This happens when there is no association saved for SVG files on your computer. Just remember that Chrome HTML files are actually SVG files in this case.

Downloading SVG Files on a Mac

If you are using a Mac computer, the process of downloading SVG files is similar. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Locate the file you want to download and click on the link or download button.
  • The file will start downloading, and you can find it in your Downloads folder on your Mac. If you’re unsure where your computer downloads files, you can check the Downloads folder in Chrome by clicking the little down arrow next to the file name at the bottom of the window.
  • Similar to Windows, the downloaded file will be a compressed archive ending in .zip. To open and decompress the zip file, simply double-click on it. A new folder with the same name as the zip file will appear. Double-click on the folder to open it and access its contents. Inside, you will find various files, including text files, PNG files, DXF files, and SVG files. The SVG file is the one you want to use.
  • It’s important to note that you should not double-click or open an SVG file directly. This is because your computer will search for an illustration software to open it, which most people do not have. Instead, you should upload the SVG file as it is, which we will cover in the next video.

Downloading SVG Files on an iPad or iPhone

Downloading SVG files on an iPad or iPhone is also possible, thanks to the introduction of iOS version 11. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Open the Safari browser on your iPad or iPhone and locate the SVG file you want to download.
  • Tap on the file to start the download. You will see a screen with options.
  • Tap “Open in Files” to proceed. This will allow you to save the file in a location accessible from Cricut Design Space or Silhouette Studio.
  • Choose the location where you want to save the SVG file. Options include iCloud Drive, your iPad or iPhone, or a third-party service like Dropbox. For this tutorial, we will save it to iCloud Drive.
  • Tap the “Add” button to save the file. You will see a confirmation screen indicating that a zip file has been saved.
  • To access the SVG file within the zip file, tap “Preview Content.” This will show you the contents of the zip file, including text documents and the SVG file.
  • Look for the file labeled “SVG image” in the list and tap on it. This will display a graphical representation of the SVG cut file.
  • Tap the “Upload” button, which looks like a box with an up arrow. Then, tap “Save to Files” and choose the location where you want to save the SVG file (e.g., iCloud Drive).
  • Tap “Add” to save the SVG file to the chosen location.
  • The SVG file is now saved and ready to be uploaded to Cricut Design Space or Silhouette Studio, which we will cover in the next video.
